My family is spread across three countries, and I’ve got a sister in Lisbon. So I’ve been on the hunt for a phone plan that lets me call abroad without turning into a monthly surprise bill. That search is what eventually led me to Lyca Mobile, and honestly? It’s the one thing this brand does better than most of its competitors.

For anyone who doesn’t know them: Lyca Mobile is the world’s largest international MVNO. They don’ own towers — they resell service from major carriers. In the US they run on AT&T’s network, so you get real nationwide coverage and 5G without the full AT&T bill. And every single plan includes unlimited talk and text, plus international calling to over 100 countries at no extra charge. That last part is the whole reason I stayed.

Why the International Calling Is the Standout

"Lyca

Here’s the comparison that actually matters. Most budget prepaid carriers — Mint, US Mobile, Cricket ’ their usual discount plans — either charge a few cents a minute to call abroad, only include a handful of countries, or require you to add a pass. Lyca just includes unlimited international talk and text to 100+ countries on every plan, even the cheapest one. If you call family overseas regularly, that alone justifies the difference in price. You’re not adding an international calling pack or worrying about roaming charges blowing up your bill.

They also run really aggressive switcher promotions. Right now there are plans at like $5–$12.50 a month for the first several months, which is genuinely cheap. Set a reminder before the promo ends, because the regular price jumps considerably afterward.

The Plans and What You Actually Get

The lineup has four unlimited tiers plus a few limited-data options:

At the bottom is the $29 Unlimited International Plan with 15GB of high-speed data and 10GB of hotspot. The $39 plan bumps you to 25GB. Unlimited Plus at $49 gives 40GB plus a 15GB hotspot, and Unlimited Pro at $59 also gives 40GB with a 25GB hotspot. Every one of them carries the unlimited talk, text, and international calling.

For most people, the $29 plan is more than enough. The average American uses something like 10–15GB of data a month, so 15GB is comfortable unless you’re streaming video constantly. I’m a heavy hotspot user and the Unlimited Plus plan handles my work calls without breaking a sweat.

"Lyca

Coverage and Speed Are Genuinely Good

Since switching to AT&T’s network, Lyca’s service has gotten noticeably better, especially in rural areas where T-Mobile used to leave gaps. Independent testers have clocked 5G download speeds over 200Mbps in some spots, and even managed hotspot connections inside a parking garage. For streaming, gaming, and video calls, I haven’t had an issue. The network doesn’t drop calls when you switch between Wi-Fi and cellular, which is more than I can say for some prepaid carriers.

The Parts That Annoy Me

Customer service is the weak spot, and it’s worth warning you about before you sign up. Their chatbot is basically useless — if it doesn’t know the answer, it just stops responding. The online chat agents are helpful but rushed, and I’ve been disconnected mid-sentence more than once. You can get things sorted, but it takes patience.

The app is also weaker than it should be. You can pay your bill and change plans, but the usage tracker buttons mostly don’t work, which means if you’re on a capped data plan you’re tracking your data yourself. And they killed the family plan options, which used to be one of the better reasons to pick them up. If you’re putting three lines on one account, look elsewhere.

Last thing: at full price, Lyca is expensive. Unlimited Plus at $49 for 40GB is a tougher deal than what US Mobile and Cricket charge for similar or more data. The promotional pricing is where the value is, and I’d be honest with you: use the promo, then re-evaluate.

Bottom Line

If international calling is a requirement, Lyca Mobile is one of the better options in the US market, and the family-plan users aside, the coverage and speeds are solid. If you don’t need to call abroad and you’re price-sensitive, there are cheaper options with more data. But if your people are scattered across borders, this is the plan that solves a real problem without roaming fees.
